Learn more about fecal microbiota transplants and FMT capsules from my interview with Dr Mark Davis and Fox 12 News anchor Wayne Garcia:
Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT), also known as human probiotic infusion, bacteriotherapy, and fecal transplant, is a powerful infusion of healthy colon flora which has been used to treat C difficile infections, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and other conditions.
An extract of healthy bacteria from the stool of an extensively screened donor is suspended in solution and delivered to the patient via enema, which is then retained for 4-6 hours, or it is further refined and encapsulated. Fecal microbiota transplants may also be delivered via nasogastric tube or colonoscope. I offer FMT via retention enema and via oral capsules, neither of which has any known serious adverse effects.
Currently, the FDA allows fecal microbiota transplants to be given for antibiotic resistant C difficile colitis. FMT appears to be approximately 90% effective with a single treatment for treating refractory (antibiotic resistant) C difficile infections.
I am currently only able to treat patients in my office who have antibiotic resistant C difficile infection. To schedule, please call 503-908-4813 or email info@microbiomes.com
